DRM Removal from Kobo eBook Purchases
Kobo has lenient DRM security, not as restrictive as Amazon’s (which has been getting worse).
For now, Kobo still uses Adobe DRM, which protects the book with the buyer’s email address as proof of purchase.
To remove this restriction and allow you to read your purchased ebook on any eReader that does not support Adobe DRM, you can use the following tools and a little bit of your time.
Tools You Will Need
- Calibre eBook Management Application
Gold standard to organize & tag your eBook collection - Obok Calibre Plugin (
Obok_plugin.zip)
Third-party tool that removes DRM protection - Kobo Desktop Application
Needed to download your purchased books to your local PC
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Download and Unzip the Obok_plugin.zip (Inside the DeDRM_Tools_10.0.9.zip)

- It will detect your new downloads and present a list of books.
- DRM-protected books are shown with a red lock.
- Select the books you want to import, and the plugin will strip DRM where needed.
Here we see only a few books have DRM from Kobo.

Step 8: Verify
Open the books with red locks in Calibre.
If they open successfully, they are now DRM-free.
This tutorial is for educational purposes only. DRM removal should only be performed on books you legally own. Always comply with your local copyright laws and the terms of service of your eBook retailer. The purpose of DRM removal should be to create personal backups or to read your legally purchased books on different devices.
